WORLD MOUNTAIN PEOPLE ASSOCIATION
2000-2012 WMPA'S KEY EVENTS

From 5th to 9th June 2000: World Mountain Forum Paris-Chambery (French National Assembly and the UNESCO): 855 participants from 70 countries (more than 500 from Europe, 50 from Latin America, 60 from Africa, 63 from East and Central Asia, 9 from North America). Adoption of a final declaration and of a draft Charter of World Mountain Populations

10th April 2001, Paris: constituent assembly of the WMPA: an association divided into three bodies working in favour of the mountain peoples. It was constituted on the initiative of three associations composed by elected representatives of the European mountains (ANEM, AEM, and UNCEM) as well as by representatives of the mountain territories from more than fifty countries, together with several NGOs and researchers. Main goal: to increase their control over their destiny and their development model.

From 15th to 19th April 2002: Himalayan regional meeting of mountain people in Yuksam, Sikkim (India): 135 participants from Bangladesh, India and Nepal on the subject: water management by local communities; It is decided to create national and regional brands of the WMPA in the Himalayas.

August 2002: Andean regional meeting of mountain people in Achocalla (Bolivia). Major subjects and the Achocalla declarations on the coca leaf and on the rejection of free trade agreements.

From 17th to 19th November 2002: 2nd meeting of the world’s mountain people and 1st constitutive general assembly of the WMPA – Quito (Ecuador) (40 countries y 400 participants): creation of an international Board made up of more than 40 people: adoption of the Charter of World Mountain Populations.

From 31st August to 5th September 2003: International Board meeting in Ispoure – Basque Country – France and international seminar on “mountain agriculture and globalisation” (Cameroon, Bolivia, Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Ecuador, Nepal, India, Japan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Uzbekistan, Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Georgia, Romania, Poland): adoption of the statutes of the WMPA.

3 and 4 December 2004: international board in Turin – Piedmont Region – Italy and thematic sessions on “mountain products and labellisation” and “local autonomy and mountain” in Europe. (Cameroon, Madagascar, Morocco, Uganda, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, India, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, France, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Switzerland)

From 11th to 15th April 2005: thematic seminar in Tripuradevi (India) in the Uttar State “marketing of mountain products and specification of their origin” (30 participants from India and Nepal). Agreement to constitute a WMPA in every Indian State of the Himalayas.

May 2005: WMPA technical committee – Martigny – Switzerland

20-22 September 2005: Andean regional meeting CONAMAQ-VSF-CICDA-WMPA in La Paz (Bolivia): "Territories, autonomy and State". La Paz Declaration of the Andean mountain peoples.

7-10 September 2006: Andean regional meeting of mountain peoples in Cusco (Peru): (57 participants: 51 from Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru) – Cusco Declaration.

8-10 March 2006: thematic meeting at Shillong in the Meghalaya State (Northwest India) (30 participants) on “production and sustainable and equitable services from local cultures”.

May 2006: thematic meeting in Tripuradevi, Uttar Anchal (India). Subject: water and river management and renewable energy.

11-15 October 2006: regional meeting of Himalayan mountain people in Sairopa, Himachal Pradesh (India). Participants: Nepal, India, Arunachal-pradesh, Assam, Delhi, Himachal, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Uttarakhand). Sairopa Declaration.

16-17 October 2006: regional meeting of Southern African Mountain Populations in Maseru (Lesotho). Participants: Republic of South Africa, Lesotho, Malawi, Zimbabwe).   

7-10 November 2006: regional meeting of Northern African Mountain Populations in Nador (Morocco). Participants: Algeria, Morocco, Libya, Niger, Mali, Spain/Canaries). Nador Declaration.  

13-15 November 2006: regional meeting of Eastern African Mountain Populations in Moshi, Kilimanjaro Mountain (Tanzania). Participants: Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Zambia y Zimbabwe). Kilimanjaro Declaration.

 

27-29 November 2006: regional meeting of Central and Eastern African Mountain Populations in Bafoussam (Cameroon). Participants: Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Burundi, Central African Republic). Bafoussam Declaration.

4-5 October 2007, Turin: China-Europe Mountain Workshop

2008, HIMALAYAS - Meghalaya (INDIA), Kuringhat, Dhading, Kupondole Lalitpur, Kathmandu (NEPAL): regional meeting on the project of Himalayan centres

From 29th to 31st January 2009: First World Forum of Producers of Crops Declared to be Illicit in Barcelona (Spain) – WMPA/CERAI. Final Political declaration.

2010: Programme "Communities, territories and management of natural resources" about twelve ECADIM (Multiple-Dimension Case Studies) and regional meetings (Morocco, China, Colombia, Bolivia, France)

25 September-3 October 2010: Third International Meeting of Mountain Populations, Atlantic Pyrenees (France) – 40 countries, 400 participants – Adoption of the Oloron Manifesto. The text was submitted to the UNESCO on the 4th October 2011.
